This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features local saxophonist heavy-weight Smith Dobson V paying tribute to legendary jazz giant Lester Young tonight at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street). The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session on the fascinating life and times of the great tenor saxophonist known by many as "Prez", led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón during intermission. I will kick things off around 8PM, spinning some of his favorite Lester Young-inspired jazz selections from the 50's and 60's.
This show will close out Hotplate's long-standing run at Amnesia, with the monthly tribute event moving to the brand new SFJAZZ Center in February beginning with the '1st Annual SFJAZZ Hotplate Festival'. The festival, which will take place in the Joe Henderson Lab, will include notable tributes to Joe Henderson, Ray Barretto, Ella Fitzgerald and Freddie Hubbard.
