Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble

Jazzman Records put out a number of really great releases in 2012 including two of my favorite compilations in Spiritual Jazz vol.2 & 3. Continuing with their "spiritual jazz" focus, the label also reissued the very rare album Hard Luck Soul by the Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble. Like the name suggests, this group was made up solely of inmate musicians at the Ohio Penitentiary during 1971. The group was led by Reynard Birtha and Logan Rollins, who is interestingly the nephew of jazz legend Sonny Rollins. This impressive session, which is both very spiritual and soulfully groove-oriented, represents the short-lived group's only recorded material. Even though Jazzman Records only pressed a limited number of copies (1000 to be exact!), it's nice to see this extremely hard-to-find album reissued for the masses to enjoy.
