Billy Harper's "Speak to Me of Love..." Project

With the help of a recently launched Kickstarter Campaign, tenor saxophone legend Billy Harper will lead his sextet and 60 voices in a concert titled "Speak to Me of Love, Speak to Me of Truth" at St. Peter's Church in New York City on December 1st. If you've ever heard Max Roach's 1962 It's Time or Eddie Gale's 1968 Ghetto Music, it's easy to see how large choirs and choruses can have a powerful effect on spiritually inspired jazz music. This couldn't be a more fitting project for an artist that helped lead the post-Coltrane spiritual jazz movement of the late sixties and seventies with groundbreaking albums like Capra Black, Black Saint, The Awakening and many others. You can learn more and watch an insightful video of Harper discussing this project by visiting his Kickstarter page. For those that can't actually attended this exciting event in New York, it looks like there will be both a CD and DVD release of the recorded December 1st performance.

Here is one my many favorite recordings from the legendary saxophonist in "Soran-Bushi, B.H." from 1981. ENJOY!
