Stanley Cowell - Travelin' Man
Legendary pianist and composer Stanley Cowell has contributed to a number of timeless recordings, especially during the late sixties and seventies. One of his greatest works came in 1976 when he recorded and released the album Regeneration. This soulful spiritual masterpiece came out on Strata-East, a phenomenal label he co-founded with trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and features a superb cast of jazz heavy-weights including Marion Brown (wooden flute), Jimmy Heath (flute), Billy Higgins (drums), Ed Blackwell (percussion) and many others. The record also features a number of great spiritual jazz gems including my favorite composition by Cowell in "Travelin' Man", which also features Charles Fowlkes on vocals. Even though this recording doesn't represent Cowell's most intense and free sounding work, Regeneration features some of his greatest compositions and one of the most essential releases that the Strata-East label ever put out. ENJOY!
