Richard Davis - Epistrophy & Now's The Time

I picked up a number of great gems this past weekend at the KUSF Rock-n-Swap record show. One of the finds was Richard Davis' 1972 release Epistrophy & Now's The Time. As the title suggests, the album which was recorded live in New York, features two twenty-plus minute long pieces in "Epistrophy" and "Now's The Time". Davis is supported on this date with a solid backing group featuring Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone), Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson (trumpet), Joe Bonner (piano), and Freddie Waits on drums. The record has a bit of a free-jazz groove throughout, with Davis, Bonner, and Waits holding down the composition's foundation nicely. Overall a solid record and a great find.
