April 2012 SFJAZZ Hotplate Mix

This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features local tenor powerhouse Anton Schwartz paying tribute to legendary saxophonist Stanley Turrentine tonight at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street). The evening will also include the always fascinating Front Burner multi-media session, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón on the life and times of the musician also known as "Mr.T". As always, it should make for a really great event!

This month's Hotplate mix features a number of Stanley Turrentine's classic and yet highly diverse recordings including the soulful "Return Of The Prodigal Son", the Latin flavored "La Fiesta", the funky Afro-centric "Niger Mambo" and many others. The mix also includes some highlights of Turrentine contributing as a sideman on Horace Silver's "Jungle Juice", Art Taylor's percussion-heavy "Cooki & Fungi" and the Brazilian jazz masterpiece "Vera Cruz" featured on the 1971 CTI Album Gilberto with Turrentine. Enjoy!
