Mary Lou Williams - Black Christ of the Andes
To pivot from one great record by Mary Lou Williams (see 02/27/13 'Zoning' post) to another, I thought I would feature "Praise The Lord" from the legendary jazz pianist' 1963 album Black Christ of the Andes. The track, as well as the entire recording, has an overall spiritual feel, incorporating gospel style vocals, blues-rooted rhythms and some impressive piano solos by Williams. Pieces like "Praise The Lord" feel like they could be performed in both a church or a nightclub. I'm not a religious person, however I can really enjoy the overall spirit of recordings like this one. Overall, another great record from Mary Lou Williams, who was an artist that wasn't shy about expressing her spiritual beliefs through her music.
