Sun Ra - The Nubians Of Plutonia
Building off the last post, I though I would feature another classic gem from cosmic jazz legend Sun Ra, titled "The Golden Lady". This Afro-centric masterpiece was originally featured on the 1960 album The Nubians Of Plutonia (Saturn Research label), and was later re-released on Impulse! Records in 1974. The record features many of the more notable musicians that played in the Arkestra including James Spaulding (alto Saxophone), Charles Davis & Pat Patrick (baritone saxophone), Ronnie Boykins (bass), John Gilmore (tenor saxophone), Philip Corhan (trumpet) and many others. Sun Ra undoubtedly released a number of brilliant recordings during his life, however in my opinion The Nubians Of Plutonia is right up there with his best recorded material, blending his experimental cosmic sound with traditionally influenced African grooves and percussive rhythms. Definitely a defining groundbreaking gem from both Sun Ra and his Arkestra.
