Don Cherry - Brown Rice
During Don Cherry's life, the legendary jazz trumpeter released many highly diversified recordings. In 1975, Cherry released the mind-blowing album Brown Rice which features the trumpeter fusing together both jazz and traditionally rooted sounds from other world regions like India, Africa and the Middle East. The entire record has an overall electric feel similar to, let's say Miles Davis' Bitches Brew or Herbie Hanock's Mwandishi. The spiritual record features four solid tracks including "Malkauns", "Chenrezig", "Degi-Degi" and the funky title track "Brown Rice". The album is backed by a solid cast of musicians including Franke Lowe (tenor saxophone), Charlie Haden (bass), Billy Higgins (drums) and many others. This is simply Don Cherry at his best, brilliantly stretching the boundaries in a groove-oriented setting that takes the listener on a hypnotic musical journey.
