Pharoah Sanders - You've Got to Have Freedom

This past Saturday I went to see Pharaoh Sanders and his quartet play at Yoshi's in Oakland. This was my second time seeing the legendary jazz saxophonist and he did not disappoint, putting on one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. He played the perfect mix of calming spiritual ballads and hi-energy scorchers including John Coltrane's classic "Giant Steps" and an excerpt from his signature masterpiece "The Creator Has a Master Plan". Overall it was an incredible performance that at times, was so moving, that it's intense emotion admittedly brought tears to my eyes. With that being said, I thought I would therefore start off the week with another one of my favorite compositions from the spiritual jazz legend in "You've Got To Have Freedom". This studio rendition was released in 1980 on Pharoah's Journey to the One record which features Idris Muhammand (drums), Eddie Henderson (flugelhorn), Ray Drummond (bass), John Hicks (piano) and many others. A classic track to compliment what was an impressive and very memorable performance this past Saturday in the East Bay. ENJOY!
