Woody Shaw - Blackstone Legacy

From one great trumpeter to the next, here is the title track from Woody Shaw's 1971 explosive masterpiece Blackstone Legacy. This date represents Shaw's debut leading a group on a recording, which consisted of Ron Carter (acoustic bass), Clint Houston (electric bass), Lenny White (drums), George Cables (piano), Gary Bartz (alto & soprano saxophone), and Bennie Maupin (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute). The record is solid from start to finish, blending free-form soloing with some hard bop grooves that show traces of both heavy spiritualism and Afro-centric rhythms.  Other tracks include "Think of Me", "Lost and Found", "New World", "Boo-Ann's Grand", and "A Deed For Dolphy". Just one of the many brilliant recordings Woody Shaw contributed on during his life.
