SFJAZZ Hotplate: Music of Gil Scott-Heron

This Thursday night(April 11) is another monthly rendition of SFJAZZ Hotplate in the Joe Henderson Lab at the SFJAZZ Center. This month's show features local Bay Area vocalist Scheherazade Stone singing the music of the late Gil Scott-Heron. Make sure to show up early for each set as I will be spinning some of the legend's best-known tracks, as well as a heavy dose of righteous soul jazz gems before the live music begins. The last time SFJAZZ presented this show last June at Amnesia, the place was jumpin', while Scheherazade and company put on an amazing tribute performance. Should once again be a great show!

Here is a re-posting of the hour long Hotplate mix I put together a while back when we first presented Scheherazade Stone's tribute to Gil Scott-Heron less than a year ago. The mix features a number of classic gems taken from Gil Scott-Heron's many solo led recordings, as well as some choice cuts he co-wrote and produced with multi-instrumentalist and long time music counterpart Brian Jackson. With the ability to blend jazz, funk, and soulful grooves together with socially conscious poetry and politically driven vocals, it's easy to see why many (including myself) consider Gil Scott-Heron one of the most influential and important singer/songwriters to have come out of America in the second half of the last century.

Bobby Hutcherson Tribute TONIGHT!

This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features rising vibes star Chris Dingman paying tribute to legendary vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson tonight at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street). The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session on the fascinating life and times of the jazz giant, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón during intermission. I will be starting things off with a deejay set around 8PM featuring a choice selection of my favorite Bobby Hutcherson gems and more.

For those that use Spotify, I put together a playlist mix that includes some of my favorite recordings featuring the undisputed king of the mallets. With a highly impressive, yet diverse collection of music credited to his name as both a leader and a sideman, it's easy to see why most critics hail Bobby Hutcherson as one of jazz's greatest and most influential vibraphonist. This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate couldn't be any bigger with local trumpeter John Worley paying tribute to one of jazz music's greatest iconic musicians, Miles Davis. This event will take place this Thursday night at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street) with DJ Pat Les Stache starting things off spinning a choice selection of fifties and sixties era Hard Bop jazz gems roughly around 8pm. The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session with SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón on the fascinating life and times of the legendary jazz artist.



With a career span of 50 years, it is practically impossible to sum up Miles Davis’ career in just one hour long audio exploration. Therefore, this month's SFJAZZ Hotplate mix consists of a choice selection of personal favorites from both of Miles Davis' two great quintets in which he led during the fifties and early sixties. With one listen, it should be easy to understand why Rolling Stone proclaimed the trumpeter, composer and bandleader as "one of the greatest innovators in jazz". ENJOY!

This exclusive Hotplate mix highlights some of Eddie Palmieri's most notable compositions as well as his collaborative work he did with Cal Tjader and the pianists' all-star group Harlem River Drive. Even though this mix only just begins to dive into the many brilliant compositions and recordings Palmieri has contributed to throughout his life, the hour-long audio exploration should help give a short glimpse as to why many people believe he is one of the most exciting and renowned Latin pianists and band leaders of his time. Even though Cobham has made his mark as being widely considered as the greatest jazz-fusion drummer of his time, the heavy-hitting Panama-born musician and composer has consistently showcased through a wide range of recordings the overall complexity and diverse nature of his playing. Not only does, the mix highlight some of his classic fusion cuts like "Sorcery", "Stratus", and "Nickels and Dimes", the mix also touches upon some of his Latin, soul, and electronic/dub explorations. This month's Hotplate mix features a number of Stanley Turrentine's classic and yet highly diverse recordings including the soulful "Return Of The Prodigal Son", the Latin flavored "La Fiesta", the funky Afro-centric "Niger Mambo" and many others. The mix also includes some highlights of Turrentine contributing as a sideman on Horace Silver's "Jungle Juice", Art Taylor's percussion-heavy "Cooki & Fungi" and the Brazilian jazz masterpiece "Vera Cruz" featured on the 1971 CTI Album Gilberto with Turrentine. I will be getting the night started around 8pm with an hour long deejay set that will include many of Hubert Laws most notable recordings, as well as a solid selection of funky jazz gems. The evening will also include the always fascinating Front Burner multi-media session on the life and times of Hubert Laws, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón.

Much like last month, I put together an hour long Hotplate mix that features a number of Hubert Laws classic recordings both as a leader and a sideman. I also included a couple of my all-time favorite jazz flute compositions including Ju-Par Universal Orchestra's often overlooked gem "Flute Salad" and the funky classic "Harlem River Drive" by Bobbi Humphrey. A heavy dose of funky jazz-flute action!

Feb 2012 SFJAZZ Hotplate Mix

This past Thursday's SFJAZZ Hotplate event, which payed tribute to saxophone legend Cannonball Adderley, featured an incredible performance from an impressive group of local Bay Area musicians led by local jazz alto saxophonist Larry De La Cruz. The sextet, which also featured Mike Zilber (tenor sax), John Worley (trumpet), Adam Shulman (piano), Dan Feiszli (bass) and Jon Arkin (drums), played a very energetic set that included a number of Cannonball's most notable tracks as a leader like "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "The Sleeper", as well as a few selections that the alto saxophonist contributed to as a sideman including "So What" off of Miles Davis' 1959 classic recording "Kind of Blue".

I had the privilege of both opening the show with an hour long deejay set and playing during the brief intermission. I included both original material from many of Cannonball's recordings mixed in with a number of swingin' bebop and hard bop gems in the spirit of the legendary saxophonist. Throughout my deejay set, I had many people walk up to me and ask me about the music I was playing and therefore decided to put together a short hour long mix of the tracks that I included during my set. Below is both the streaming audio mix, as well as the tracklisting.

Next month's SFJAZZ Hotplate event will feature Chloe Jane Scott paying tribute to legendary jazz flutist Hubert Laws. Should be another incredible show, so don't miss it!
