McCoy Tyner - Asante

Today, as we wish McCoy Tyner a Happy Birthday as he turns 74, I thought I would also highlight one of my all-time favorite gems from the legendary pianist, titled "Malika". This Afro-spiritual masterpiece is featured on Tyner's 1970 release Asante. The record, which was his last for Blue Note Records, features a solid group of musicians that include Andrew White (alto saxophone), Teddy Dunbar (guitar), Buster Williams (bass), Billy Hart (drums), Mtume (congas, percussion) and others. Asante was recorded at a time when Tyner was rediscovering himself, helping to foreshadow the direction he ended up pursuing musically when he signed with Milestone Records, which was more spiritual and intense. Overall, a solid recording that features one of Tyner's greatest compositions.
