This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features rising vibes star Chris Dingman paying tribute to legendary vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson tonight at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street). The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session on the fascinating life and times of the jazz giant, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón during intermission. I will be starting things off with a deejay set around 8PM featuring a choice selection of my favorite Bobby Hutcherson gems and more.
For those that use Spotify, I put together a playlist mix that includes some of my favorite recordings featuring the undisputed king of the mallets. With a highly impressive, yet diverse collection of music credited to his name as both a leader and a sideman, it's easy to see why most critics hail Bobby Hutcherson as one of jazz's greatest and most influential vibraphonist.
