Woody Shaw - Love Dance

Legendary trumpet player and composer Woody Shaw has played on some of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded. One record that doesn't seem to get the recognition it truly deserves, probably mostly due to it's Japanese-only release, is his 1976 album Love Dance. This record, which was released on Muse Records, includes an impressive cast of jazz heavy-weights including Steve Turre (trombone), Rene McLean & Billy Harper (saxophone), Joe Bonner (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), Victor Lewis (drums), Guilherme Franco (percussion) and Tony Waters (congas). Nothing captures the essence of the record more than the album's title track which, like much of the rest of the record, has an overall soulful yet spiritual groove similar to some of Shaw's other recordings like Blackstone Legacy, The Moontrane, and the record that the trumpeter did with saxophonists David Schnitter and Azar Lawrence in the mid seventies titled Black Renaissance. Overall another brilliant masterpiece from one of jazz music's greatest trumpeters.
