Lee Morgan - Search For The New Land

It becomes a very difficult task ranking my favorite recordings by trumpeter Lee Morgan. Over the last couple of years, I've collected many releases from the late jazz legend and over that time I've become a huge fan of his work. One of my favorite recordings released by Morgan is the 1964 Blue Note release Search For The New Land. This recording features a heavy-weight cast of legendary musicians including Herbie Hancock (piano), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Reggie Workman (bass), Grant Green (guitar), and Billy Higgins (drums). This record has a slightly more spiritual feel than some of Morgan's earlier hard-bop focused releases. The album highlights include the fifteen-plus minute title track opener, "Search For The New Land" followed by some solid gems like "Mr. Kenyatta", "Morgan The Pirate", and "The Joker". Overall, Lee Morgan has contributed to some of jazz music's finest recordings and Search For The New Land might just rank up their with some of his best. ENJOY!
