McCoy Tyner - Sama Layuca

I'm very much looking forward to seeing McCoy Tyner perform tonight at Yoshi's in San Francisco. The legendary jazz pianist and composer, who is one of my all-time favorite artists, will be joined by another jazz giant in saxophonist Gary Bartz. No introductions are necessary at this engagement, as Bartz has been featured on a number of Tyner's greatest recordings including Expansions, Extensions, Sama Layuca, Looking Out, and others. The records that they have recorded together have resulted in some of their more experimental recordings, many featuring a heavy dose of traditional African influences. Tyner has played with a number of amazing saxophonists throughout the last fifty years (John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Henderson for starters), however his collaborative work with Bartz has shown that when their paths cross, they also prove to be quite the dynamic team. As always, it will be an honor to watch them both perform together again on the same stage tonight.
