This Thursday night is another monthly installment of SFJAZZ Hotplate at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street, San Francisco), with Chloe Jane Scott paying tribute to jazz flute legend Hubert Laws. I will be getting the night started around 8pm with an hour long deejay set that will include many of Hubert Laws most notable recordings, as well as a solid selection of funky jazz gems. The evening will also include the always fascinating Front Burner multi-media session on the life and times of Hubert Laws, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón.
Much like last month, I put together an hour long Hotplate mix that features a number of Hubert Laws classic recordings both as a leader and a sideman. I also included a couple of my all-time favorite jazz flute compositions including Ju-Par Universal Orchestra's often overlooked gem "Flute Salad" and the funky classic "Harlem River Drive" by Bobbi Humphrey. A heavy dose of funky jazz-flute action!
