Dave Holland Quintet - Four Winds

Tonight, legendary jazz bassist Dave Holland will ‬be performing alongside his impressive Overtone Quartet in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. This will easily be one of the most anticipated shows this winter/ spring that I'm personally looking forward to seeing. Overtime, Holland has simply become one of my favorite bassists. He has contributed to so many of my favorite jazz records including Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Big Fun, and Water Babies, Wayne Shorter's Moto Grosso Feio, Jack DeJohnette's Sorcery, as well as Joe Henderson's Multiple and Black is the Color. He has also collaborated numerous times with jazz legends Anthony Braxton, Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Barry Altschul, Sam Rivers, and countless others. As a leader, Holland has released a number of great albums including Jumpin' In, The Razor’s Edge, Extensions, and my personal favorite Conference of the Birds. It's hard to think of many more active jazz musicians that have, not only contributed to so many legendary recordings, but been such an influential and important player in the music's overall development. Holland is joined tonight by some of jazz music's most brightest and upcoming musicians in Chris Potter (saxophone), Jason Moran (piano), and Eric Harland (drums). There is no doubt in my mind that this will be an amazing show, one in which will arguably feature one of jazz music's greatest bassists.

Here is one of my favorite compositions from Dave Holland in "Four Winds", which was released off his 1973 ECM album Conference of the Birds. The track also features Barry Altschul, Anthony Braxton, and Sam Rivers.
