Are You Listening?

What is jazz?

Nina Simone once stated that "Jazz is not just music, it's a way of life, it's a way of being, a way of thinking."

Legendary drummer Max Roach had a different interpretation. "Jazz is a democratic musical form. We take our respective instruments & collectively create a thing of beauty."

Ornette Colemen regarded, "Jazz is the only music in which the same note can be played night after night but differently each time."

Over the years and decades that this great American art form has rooted itself into our culture, many people have come up with their own definition and personal meaning for jazz. In January SFJAZZ (the San Francisco based jazz organization I work for) launched the areyoulistening.me website, a place where everyone can go and share with others in there own words what jazz is to them.

Join the discussion today, as hundreds of people already have and let us know what jazz is to you?
