McCoy Tyner - Message From the Nile

On this week's radio show, I featured one of my all-time favorite McCoy Tyner songs in "Message From The Nile". This African inspired spiritual jazz gem was the opening track on Tyner's 1972 album Extensions, which was released off of Blue Note Records. The recording features a number of legendary jazz musicians including Wayne Shorter and Gary Bartz on saxophone, Ron Carter on acoustic bass, Alice Coltrane on harp, and Elvin Jones on drums. With a heavy-weight cast of musicians to help support Tyner on this date, it's easy to understand why this was one of the pianists' most notable recordings as a leader. It also finds Tyner diving deeply into his exploration of African music, which became a major focus of his during the early to mid seventies. Overall, a timeless classic from one of jazz's greatest minds.
