Cecil McBee - Pepi's Samba

Before I begin my long holiday weekend, I thought I would share one of my favorite tracks from bassist Cecil McBee as a leader in "Pepi's Samba". This funky jazz gem was included on McBee's 1977 Compassion record and was written by saxophonist Chico Freeman, who is also featured on the live recording. The song nicely blends Freeman's fierce playing with a solid Latin-flavored rhythm groove held down by McBee and percussionist Famoudou Don Moye (of Art Ensemble of Chicago) and drummer Steve McCall. Overall, "Pepi's Samba" represents the record's most notable highlight, which also features two solid McBee written compositions in "Compassion" and "Undercurrent". Just one of the many classic recordings that the legendary bassist has contributed on during his brilliant music career.

Happy Holidays!
